Tasting Notes: Violet hard drops / Gooseberry / Toffee
This coffee comes from Kieni Factory in Nyeri County, one of Kenya's most celebrated coffee-growing regions. Operated by the Mugaga Farmers' Cooperative Society, the mill receives cherries from around 1,000 smallholder farming families who cultivate coffee on the fertile volcanic slopes between the Aberdare Mountains and Mount Kenya. At 1,700 metres above sea level, the cool climate allows the cherries to mature slowly, producing the dense beans and vibrant cup profile that have made Nyeri coffees renowned around the world.
Produced from the classic Kenyan varieties SL28, SL34 and Ruiru 11, this lot is fully washed using traditional Kenyan processing methods. After harvesting, the cherries are pulped, fermented overnight, thoroughly washed and slowly dried on raised beds for up to two weeks. This meticulous process preserves the clarity, sweetness and lively character that define great Kenyan coffee.
In the cup, expect delicate floral notes reminiscent of violet hard drops, followed by juicy gooseberry and layers of ripe red berries. A rich toffee sweetness rounds everything out, creating a beautifully balanced cup with a syrupy body and a long, clean finish.
This is everything we love about a classic Kenyan coffee. Vibrant, elegant and full of character, with enough complexity to keep every cup interesting while remaining wonderfully approachable.
