A bright and sweet peaberry from the slopes of Mt. Kenya. Produced by smallholder farmers who deliver their cherries to the long-standing Gichugu Coffee Factory, part of the Gakundu Farmers’ Cooperative Society, this PB lot is naturally sweeter and more concentrated in flavour. The team at the factory hand sort, pulp and carefully wash the coffee before slow drying it on raised beds. Expect juicy ruby grapefruit, crisp grape and a smooth milk chocolate ganache finish.

Description

Gichugu is a classic washed Kenyan grown on the fertile volcanic slopes of Mt. Kenya and processed at the long-standing Gichugu Coffee Factory in Embu County. The factory has been part of the Gakundu Farmers’ Cooperative Society since the early seventies and today supports more than eight hundred smallholder farmers from the nearby villages of Kamviu, Gichugu and Manyatta.

This lot is graded PB, which refers to “peaberry”. A peaberry forms when only one seed develops inside the coffee cherry rather than the usual two. This creates a naturally rounder and slightly denser bean that often roasts more evenly. Peaberries are known for being a touch sweeter with a more concentrated flavour, and they make up only a small percentage of the harvest.

The cup shows everything we love about the region. It is structured and balanced with a sweet, layered profile and a bright citrus drive. We taste ruby grapefruit and juicy grape with a smooth milk chocolate ganache finish. The acidity is lively and complex with gentle tannins adding depth and clarity.

The factory sits at 1,680 metres above sea level where rich red volcanic soils and cool temperatures create ideal conditions for high-quality Arabica. Farmers cultivate SL 28, SL 34, Ruiru 11 and Batian. Cherries are handpicked at peak ripeness and delivered to the wet mill on the same day. After sorting they are pulped, fermented overnight, washed, soaked and then dried on raised beds for seven to fifteen days.

Gichugu places a strong emphasis on community and environmental stewardship. Credit for farm inputs and school fees supports families throughout the year and Coffee Management Services provides ongoing training in sustainable farming. Wastewater is carefully managed through multiple soak pits with grass and trees planted around them to help purify the water. It is a thoughtful and long-term approach that shows in the cup.
